I left Unalakleet shortly after 1am. Since I ran the entire leg to Shaktoolik in the dark I can't really say much about the trail. I remember some steep hills just outside of Unalakleet that I tried to run up until I just couldn't anymore and like in Shageluk I couldn't find my way into the village. Some markers got blown away and I entered the way I should have exited. But it worked.
The run from Shaktoolik to Koyuk was "different". We were crossing the sound and running across the sea ice. This can be a very difficult section if there is a storm blowing. I had beautiful and calm weather, but it still felt a little bit spooky to run on sea ice and for hours I didn't see anything but white - no land on the horizon at all.
I arrived at Koyuk just before dark and stayed till 11:30pm. |
