March 7

I arrived in Takotna at 9am on a beautiful day and I was looking forward to a good long sleep and a fresh meal.
I fed my dogs, bedded them down and took care of their feet etc. and then eat something myself before crashing in the church (musher quarters).
I got up every 6 hours, fed the dogs, fed myself and then crawled back in my sleeping bag. After feeling a little more rested I even decided to take a shower and change my clothes.

24 hr. layover

I had noticed the swelling in my left hand when I got to Rohn, but blamed it on grabbing my handlebar to hard. I had been hanging on my handlebard almost every minute for the past 3 days - the trails were just not allowing a break at all.
In Takotna I finally decided to have a nurse look at it though. She didn't like it all and gave me a couple painfull heavy duty antibiotic shots in the "you-know-where". You guys that don't know me very well have to understand that I don't do doctors and most certainly don't to needles.
Getting shots made running Iditarod look really easy.
Mary, the nurse wanted to "operate" on me and get rid of the puss, but she was worried because there wouldn't be another "clinic" for about 36 hours. I started oral antibiotic treatement and Mary advised me to get medevaced out from wherever I was if it was getting worse. Great news!!!
The though of a forced scratch was haunting for several days!!! Not anything I wanted to do at all.

the infection this was just the beginning
